Game Ideation Document

Game Ideation  TITLE       : DungeoNeer GENRE     : Action-Stealth, Rougelite, Metroid-Vania BRIEF : DungeoNeer is set in a remote, abandoned Research Facility, where the Protagonist, an Engineer wakes up trapped with no memory of the place or the events that lead him there. The overarching goal for the player is to use all of the tools, equipment and their engineering skills to find a way out of and to uncover the mysteries of the Facility along the way.  Every time the player dies, they are sent back to the starting room and are given a different set of tools and equipment, and on the other hand the level layout, enemy positions and environmental hazards are all altered for each run. As they progress further they can unlock shortcuts, better equipment that would enable them to progress further in the next run. STORY      : Not long before the game begins, the protagonist Otto Klitzing's wife, Dr. ...

Game Design Project : Entry 3 - Game Art

Concept Sketches and 3D Modelling - The Chain Wrench I don’t spend too much time in 2D concept sketches, as I have seen through experience that something that looks good on a flat sheet of paper may not look as good or as expected in 3D view. So I tend to work on both fronts simultaneously, once I have a few good concept arts done and have a clear picture of how to get started, I jump on to making the 3D model and in the middle of it I might come back and to the sketch and try out a few different variations of a specific part to see if it fits the overall aesthetic. As a 3D artist my mind is never at rest, wherever I am, whatever I’m looking at, I’ll start wondering how I can reproduce that bevel or those curves in Maya. For as long as I can remember I have always been drawing on the back of my notebooks while in class, so I always have ready stock of rough illustrations to start a 3D model. So similarly this time as well I started with rough sketches of the wrench, I had a f...

Game Design Project : Entry 2 - Conceptualization

Conceptualization - Level Design and Game Mechanics So as soon as I finalized my core game idea, I wanted to do some research on familiar and some new science and engineering concepts and make a list of all the possible phenomenon and mechanisms that could potentially be implemented as game design concepts. One of the primary criteria was to make sure at every step of the design process that I stick to the idea that the protagonist is an Engineer and hence everything he does and by extension every game mechanic is centred on that principle. So from the tools, equipment, weapons and outfits, everything was derived from existing technology, but I had to gamify certain elements by stretching it to limits that would be deemed unrealistic, but then again I’m not trying to create a science/engineering simulator. Since last week every waking second I was thinking about how I can implement real world engineering concepts into this game. So, I sat down and started to write everything the pla...

Game Design Project : Entry 1- Ideation

Ideation - Genre Definition, Inspirations and Core Premise As a Game Designer I always took notes of good game mechanics from every game I played and additional notes on how I would improve/alter it. One of the fun little things I frequently did was taking concepts from one genre of game and trying to apply and implement it in a different one to see if it would work and analyse why this mechanic works in this game but not in the other. So all of my game design notes were an assortment of ideas and concepts for a wide range of different genres of games and till now I have not sat down and designed a game from beginning to end, even though I have a few good ones that I have started from scratch I really didn't try to expand it and design a complete game with all of the core pillars in place. One of the recent genres that I fell in love with in the past few years, and something that is also gaining momentum in the industry - Rougelikes/lites (We'll be here all day if we we...
